The science of welfare footprinting: The Welfare Footprint of the Egg

On August 4th, the Welfare Footprint Institute will hold a full-day satellite workshop for ISAE attendees on “The Welfare Footprint of the Egg”, a forthcoming book that establishes the first welfare footprint of an animal-sourced food. The work builds upon decades of animal welfare science to apply a systematic quantification of cumulative welfare impacts throughout the egg production chain, quantifying negative and positive affective states of chicks, breeders and laying hens throughout their lives, in cage and cage-free systems. Through interactive sessions, participants will explore the book’s research to (1) Learn how to establish animal welfare footprints; (2) Discuss methodological challenges in welfare impact quantification; (3) Address major research gaps in poultry welfare research and (4) Explore practical applications of welfare footprint analysis, including the quantitative integration of animal welfare considerations into economic, environmental, and policy assessments. Each session combines brief presentations with small-group discussions and hands-on exercises.

European COST Action LIFT Satellite Workshop

On 4 August, the European COST Action LIFT will organize a satellite workshop on positive animal welfare, that allows all ISAE delegates to register and attend. During this workshop, the latest conceptual research in the field of positive animal welfare, currently being carried by members of the COST Action ‘LIFTing farm animal lives’, will be interactively presented and discussed. The workshop will be divided into three themes covering definitions of key concepts (e.g. the timescale of positive states), methodologies (e.g. assessment and indicators) and on-farm applications (i.e., a catalogue for positive animal welfare assessment). Leaders of each topic will shortly present their latest findings and remaining questions, and these questions will be addressed in smaller groups.
